THE IFRA 49TH AMENDMENT – WHAT IT ENTAILS AND HOW IT WAS DERIVED

Synopsis
The fragrance industry since 1973 maintains a voluntary self-regulatory system well known to the creators of fragrance mixtures as IFRA Standards. The system has evolved over the years and the tools applied to derive the Standards have been refined. With the 49th Amendment, which should be notified end of 2019, IFRA is taking another milestone in setting its Standards. An updated version of the Quantitative Risk Assessment for skin sensitizers will be introduced, which considers aggregate exposure and where data are available systemic toxicity considerations will also be reflected. As a result the categorization system of the Standards will change from 11 to 12. The presentation will highlight some of the key changes incorporated with the 49th Amendment and outline the timeline of its implementation. There will further be some information on the program IDEA – the International Dialogue on the Evaluation of Allergens that IFRA is financing and managing in support of key materials used in the fragrance industry.

Dr Matthias Vey is a chemist by training from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. After his studies and a short period of training as a perfumer he worked in fragrance research and development for Marbert Cosmetics in Düsseldorf, Germany. He then became global regulatory affairs manager for Coty/Lancaster in Mainz, Germany. Since 2000 as the Scientific Director of IFRA, he is responsible for the management of the fragrance industry's worldwide self-regulatory programme, known as the IFRA Standards. He manages all of IFRA's science related committees and is involved in IFRA's advocacy activities. He further signs responsible for the management of the International Dialogue on the Evaluation of Allergens (IDEA).
