CONSUMER CONFIDENCE – THE EFFECT OF COSMETICS AND APPEARANCE ON MENTAL WELL-BEING

Modern society is often debating what affects consumer confidence and self-esteem, and a range of sectors (eg media, fashion, cosmetics) have a role to play. With self-esteem being at the heart of our industry, the Southern Education Event this year will explore the relationship between mental well-being and appearance with a look at the important role cosmetics play in everyone’s lives, the psychological effects of having a different skin appearance and real life examples of how using cosmetics can make a difference.

We welcome three speakers:

  • Amanda Isom (Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association)
  • Dr Anthony Bewley (Consultant Dermatologist, Barts Health)
  • Sarahjane Robertson (Look Good Feel Better)

Amanda Isom 
Amanda will consider recent data on why cosmetics and personal care matter to modern society. Her presentation will touch on her own beauty journey and her adult struggles with issues such as acne, finishing with a look at the rise of the ‘selfie’ and the role of social media on how we perceive ourselves and others.

THE SKIN AND APPEARANCE-RELATED PSYCHOLOGY – WHY SELF-ESTEEM AND SKIN DISEASE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN SKIN-DEEP

The skin is an exceptionally important tool in basic and complex human to human communication. So it's not surprising that skin welfare is a very important factor in the building and maintenance of self-esteem. When one's skin is diseased or different, this may have an impact on psycho-social well-being for some individuals. But importantly, skin disease extent does not correlate with psycho-social problems (anxiety, depression and others); and living with hidden skin disease (disease underneath clothing etc) does not mean that the individual has less psychosocial problems when compared to patients with obvious skin disease (eg on face or hands).

FACING CANCER WITH CONFIDENCE

Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) is the only international cancer support charity providing practical support for people struggling with the visible side effects of cancer treatment. Finding out you have cancer can be traumatic and daunting.  The added stress of the appearance related side-effects are demoralising and feel overwhelming. This can have serious consequences on self-esteem and confidence at a time when a positive attitude is vital. Our beneficiaries tell us that the loss of their hair and often eyebrows and eyelashes is what forces them to look “like the disease”. Look Good Feel Better’s free skincare and make-up Workshops and Masterclasses are held all over the UK for people undergoing treatment for any type of cancer.  The two-hour group sessions are led by trained beauty volunteers, who share tips and techniques specifically designed to help people look and feel more like themselves again. The psycho-social impact of coming together in a fun, relaxed and supportive group is incredibly positive as people feel less alone and alienated during their treatment.
